Best Ways to Find DLsite Works as a Non-Japanese Reader

Which formats work without Japanese, what translation badges really mean, and how to use DLsite's own samples before you spend anything.

The honest starting point: most doujin works are Japanese-only, and no score or badge changes that. But “Japanese-only” doesn’t mean “unusable” — how much the language barrier matters depends almost entirely on format.

Pick your format first

  • CG and illustration sets are the friendliest place to start. The appeal is visual; any embedded text is usually flavor rather than plot. The CG sets in our picks currently sit at a 3 for exactly this reason.
  • Manga is a coin flip. Art-driven manga reads fine; dialogue-heavy manga doesn’t. Our per-work notes say which kind you’re looking at, and Bro-chan’s comment on each work page flags the text-heavy ones.
  • Voice works and ASMR depend on whether you enjoy the sound of spoken Japanese without following it. Some people do; know yourself before buying.
  • Games carry the most text by far — menus, choices, and story. Without Japanese or an official translation, expect real friction.

What translation badges do (and don’t) mean

DLsite runs a community translation program (“Minna de Honyaku”), and some works are approved for it. A community translation badge means the door is open — not that a finished English version is guaranteed to exist. When we list one, check the work’s DLsite page for which languages are actually available before buying. Works with genuine official English editions are rarer, and we call those out separately.

Use the samples — they’re free information

Almost every DLsite product page has sample images or a trial download. Thirty seconds with the samples answers the question no listing can: does the text density bother me? Every work we list links out to its official DLsite page — via a labeled affiliate link where noted — precisely so you can do this check before spending anything.

Let the tools do the sorting

The English-Friendly Score compresses all of the above into one 0–5 rating, the ranking page orders our picks by it, and the Match Finder filters by your answers. If you’re still unsure what to check before clicking through, run the pre-purchase checklist.
